Famous Asphalt Racetracks Around the World

Asphalt has long been favoured as the surface of choice for professional racing around the world. Asphalt is peerless in terms of the smooth surfaces it can be used to create, and also in the way different aggregates can be used to suit different driving conditions and track designs. Performance wise, no other surfacing material approaches that of asphalt and to celebrate asphalt’s important role in the world of professional motorsports, we take a look at the top five asphalt racetracks around the world.

  1. Nürburgring
Once dubbed ‘The Green Hell’, this enormous motorsport complex in Germany has been the benchmark for performance racing for nearly 100 years. First built in 1925 as a local council project, Nürburgring has gone through seven different track phases over the years and is known as the toughest purpose built racetrack in the world with more than 170 corners along it’s 27 kilometer track.
  1. Circuit de Monaco
Probably one of the most famous (and unconventional) Formula One races in the world, the Circuit of Monaco is a hair raising race through the narrow streets of Monaco and one that rewards skill rather than speed. The race has been held since 1929 and features tight turns and frequent elevation shifts.
  1. Daytona International Speedway
The spiritual home of NASCAR racing, the Daytona International Speedway is a tri-oval shaped course that rewards the fastest and most powerful racers. First built in 1959, the Speedway is the home of the internationally recognized Daytona 500, the most prestigious event on the NASCAR calendar.
  1. Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit
Nestled in our own backyard is a piece of racing history. Initially built for gravel road races in 1928, the Circuit received a Grand Prix makeover in 1951 and became the birthplace of a production car race that was to later evolve into the famous Bathurst 1000. Today, the Circuit is home to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, the Superbike World Championship, and a number of V8 races throughout the year.
  1. Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps
This hilly venue is the site of the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix as well as several endurance races. Known for it’s intense corners, speed, and hilly terrain, Spa is a crowd and driver favourite despite being known as one of the most challenging tracks in the world.
